Bridging the gap in the NFC West
By Marc Rafferty

There will be smiles as wide as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco today as Niners have possibly pulled off the trade of the season.

First year GM John Lynch has traded a second round pick from next year’s Draft to secure the services of QB jimmy Garoppolo for the New England Patriots. It was only a few months ago that the Garoppolos trade value was going to be at least a first round pick with the Niners, Browns and Jets all interested in looking to do a deal with the Pats for the 2 time Super Bowl winning back up QB. It seems that Jimmy G just wanted to play football, and after 3 and half years of being back-up to the Peter Pan of football, Tom Brady, it was time for Jimmy to be front and centre of a franchise.

After being in New England since 2014 it was clear that NE wanted Garoppolo to be heir to the Brady throne...but at 40 it seems that number 12 is showing no signs of giving up his crown just yet. On current playing ability Brady could go on for another 2 or 3 years. (You can hear the groans from all round the world).

Lynch has played his hand well. With the Niners looking at possibly drafting in the top 3, Lynch will be looking to trade down to all though QB hungry teams hoping to draft the next big thing. Next year’s draft is supposed to be the greatest QB draft...well since the last great one.

If history has taught us anything it's that nothing is a certainty when it comes to drafting QBs, and this is where Lynch has won already, he's got a QB with NFL experience for a second round pick with the rest of the pack having the uncertainty of their picks. I would think that the Niners would be looking at upgrading the O Line to help give the best possibly chance of succeeding and making this team competitive. It could be the turning point for a once great franchise who for the last few seasons have really struggled.

On a side note you have to wonder: where does this leave Kirk Cousins? All the talk was that after he turned down Washington’s latest offer, that he was off to the West Coast to join QB whisperer and Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan. I would maybe put money on him now staying in Washington, as let's be honest, no one wants to go to Cleveland!
