Super Bowl LII: The Fans View

With Super Bowl LII taking place tomorrow evening between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles, myself and Kyle have been predicting the results of games throughout the season, and of course, we’re going to finish those predictions with the Super Bowl. Here’s what Kyle and myself thought:

Stuart, Aberdeen, Indianapolis Colts: I’m rooting for the Eagles, not so much for a hatred of the Patriots which has gone down a bit in the last few years since my brother starting supporting them, but more that it’d be nice to see someone else win it, with the Patriots having won it two times in the last three years. Would also be nice to see the “No Lombardis” joke end for the Eagles. Unfortunately though, or fortunately if you’re a Pats fan, I can’t see past them. If Wentz had been playing, I’d have probably fancied the Eagles. Brady has been here before and done it before, and even though the Eagles have been amazing, I just can’t see past the Patriots retaining the Lombardi. 30-24 Patriots.

Kyle, Dundee, New York Giants: Honestly, I couldn't care less about this upcoming Super Bowl. I now truly feel how Panther Dave felt when the Falcons faced the Patriots. I despise both of these teams. I know the Eagles are the lesser of 2 evils here, but I'll be damned if I find myself rooting for a divisional rival, especially one with a fanbase like the eagles. Whoever wins, we lose. Scorewise:, eh, fuck it, I'm gonna go 21-10 Patriots.

The official result of our prediction tally will be revealed live on the Go For It On Fourth Super Bowl Show, 8pm on Facebook live.

In addition to this, with it being the Super Bowl, I thought it’d be a great idea to ask more than myself and Kyle to predict the game. So, I took to social media to ask people their views on the game and how they thought it would go. The responses were interesting, varied and very, very mixed:

Pete, Dundee, New York Giants: This season has been dire, and topped off by the worst Super Bowl matching possible, unfortunately I think the Eagles break their duck. The way to beat Brady is to get in his face, and the Eagles have the best front 7 in the league. 21-17 Philly.

Dave, Dundee, Carolina Panthers: I am Dave! I've been a fan of NFL since the beginning of the 2012 season. From that year until now. I've had to sit through the pats in the Super Bowl THREE times! There comes a time when it gets boring and you end up hating on everything to do with them, including the water boys if need be. Safe to say I'm rooting for the eagles. After rooting for the Pats last year because of divisional reasons (panthers fan) I enjoyed the comeback but hated the aftermath like every other non Pats fan. The league needs a fresh winner. Eagles have done incredibly well to get this far. Especially after Wentz went down. Crazy fans aside, I wish them the best of luck. 27-24 Eagles. Close one.

George, Tampa, Florida, The COLTS!: I think this super bowl is the Eagles game to lose. If they get the run game going early and we see the same Nick Foles we saw last week the eagles will have no issue winning this game. Not to mention the defense played lights out against the Vikings who were on a huge momentum swing still. The only thing against the eagles is the lack of experience as a whole but I think with the help of the guys like Blount and Long to relax them they will be fine. My final score prediction is Eagles win 31-24.

Tom, Sheffield, Pittsburgh Steelers: Pats will win but Philly won’t make it easy and Jay Ajayi will be one to watch for Philly’s offence, predicting PAT 31-28 PHI.

Ritchie, Glasgow, Denver Broncos: I think if Wentz hadn't got injured it would be a more more straightforward prediction. The Eagles Offense and Defense are both more talented than the Patriots but they have the X factor. Brady factor. Belichick factor. Whatever it is. They just don't seem to lose. I'll tentatively predict an Eagles win but that's more in hope than anything else. Eagles 27 Patriots 21.

Joey, Liverpool, Seattle Seahawks: Philadelphia Eagles might be most unlucky team this season to make the super bowl, their blistering early season form thanks to the remarkable Carson Wentz made them a serious Conference threat, only for the MVP contender to be struck down by a serious knee injury ruling out for the season. Enter Nick Foles, the man Philly didn't want a few season back, now carrying a team without their star man. Foles has done the business and carried into the playoffs built by Wentz and co, but I can't help but feel that they are running in destiny, and as the man who is incomparable aims to win an unprecedented 6th super bowl ring. Patriots win by whatever score they want.

Josh, Tranent-East Lothian, Philadelphia Eagles: Personally think the key to winning the game for either team is attempting to stop the tight end. It’s the first time in superbowl history that both teams leading receiver heading into the game are TE. It’s easier said than done trying to stop Gronk but if the Eagles D can produce like the did against the Vikings they have a good shot. The patriots and bill belichick are known to take away the best thing in the opposing side, but with so many options in the Eagles offence you can’t pick that one force to take away. Look for Corey Clement to have a big game. 27-24 Philadelphia Eagles.

Michael, Dundee, New England Patriots: Honest opinion, i think the eagles will take the lead most of the game. Pats will make a few touchdowns and put points on the board but seems the usual strategy for the Pats is to shine and dominate in the 4th quarter. Brady will be the focus of the crowd but i think Gronk will pull off a few amazing catches. 35-27 Pats.

Hollie, Wirral, Minnesota Vikings: I’m Hollie, I’m from the Wirral and I support the Minnesota Vikings. I’m so bitter about this game, the Vikings rolling over against the Eagles was heart breaking, but I’m hoping the Eagles give the Pats a good game. The Patriots are the devils club, and they were always going to go all the way to the SuperBowl, and it’s hard to see them losing. Having a Patriots fan as a fiancé, I’m kinda hoping they win on Sunday for his sake, but equally it’ll be hilarious if they lose. Either way, it should be an interesting game. 27-3 Pats.

Keith, Moreton, New England Patriots: Looking forward to my third Super Bowl in six years since I decided to start following the sport, and chose the Pats as my team purely for the purposes of annoying the author of this piece. I’m disappointed as I felt the Vikings would have been a much better match up and provided a harder test. As it is, if we can put some pressure on Foles in the pocket and take out their RPO plays from contention, I can’t see how Philly match up and I think the best quarterback in history will start having to wear his rings across two hands. Pats 31 Eagles 17.

Kayleigh, Cardiff/ New York City, Indianapolis Colts: “Has tits, knows balls”. There were 3 things I wondered coming into this season - will we see Andrew Luck? No. Is Chris Ballard the most handsome man in the entire NFL? Definitely! And is this the last hurrah for Tom and Bill? (Tbc)- and it’s a no again. This is a near impossible task for a team at full strength - and with Wentz in the gun it would be achievable I think - but the Eagles pass rush gets negated early on as Tom picks them apart with fast releases and then it puts it on Foles to win it... this is a far bigger test than any in the season the Eagles face - it’s not an aging disinterested Eli Manning, under appreciated Kirk Cousins or vastly overrated Dak Prescott - it’s the best player we’re likely to ever see, led by the best coach we will ever see - the task is too big....Danny Amendola ends up with 3 touchdown receptions in this one - Patrick Robinson’s slow hip rotation will get highlighted up with the sluggo routes- Ajayi will keep Eagles in touching distance but my long shot bet is Neil Reynolds mentions that he’s London born more during the game than touches he gets in Q4. Tweet me to disagree! Patriots 32-24 Eagles.

Greg, Dundee, New York Jets: This game should be an exciting one to watch, even for the Pat haters. This could quite possibly be Brady's last Superbowl appearance and he'll no doubt want to go out with yet another win. Philly's D isn't to be overlooked, they will cause the Pats some problems with that front 7. I just have a hard time seeing Foles outduel Brady. You don't want to put Foles in a come from behind to win situation and I see the Pats leading the way early in this one quite comfortably. Pats 28, Eagles 10.

Clare, Dublin, Carolina Panthers: The Patriots should have far too much experience for this Super Bowl, unless the Eagles have something miraculous up their sleeve. I use the term miraculous because if last year’s Super Bowl and this year’s AFC Championship game were any indication, it’s going to take a miracle strategy to stop them. The Falcons and Jaguars will serve great examples to the Eagles what happens when you’re incapable of playing this Patriots team for 4 quarters, it results in a storied comeback led by the hand of Tom Brady and the coaching of Bill Belichick. Nick Foles has made a ton of noise this season having stepped in place of Carson Wentz, but if the Eagles wanted a fair chance of Sunday, they’d be wishing their star quarterback was fit. A Super Bowl between Tom Brady and Nick Foles sounds like a Super Bowl of men vs. boys. The Eagles are hungry and have accepted that they’re underdogs, their season has been impressive and with them they’ve carried the dreams of an entire city. I was certainly one person who didn’t expect them to dispatch of the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship as convincingly as they did. Questions must be asked as to whether the Eagles are simply that damn good or if the Vikings simply didn’t provide enough of a test despite a short-lived comeback. The short-lived comeback raised my eyebrows however in relation to the opening paragraph of this prediction piece. The Vikings didn’t have the artillery to punish the Eagles for dropping to their level but their Super Bowl opponents do. The Patriots are a reality check. A team with an elite quarterback, offensive linemen and head coach is a team of winners. Something the Eagles are not. Questions have been asked of the Patriots defense, it’s alarming how many points they can cough up. However the defensive performance in the final moments vs. the Jaguars was exceptional and has proven the Patriots can weather the high pressure. They have a champions mentality ahead of Super Bowl 52 that the Eagles will have to break, and in my honest opinion, I can only see the game on Sunday ending in a déjà vu! New England Patriots 24-17.

Matt, Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Green Bay Packers: The Patriots are always the perennial favorite to win the AFC. Whether you chalk it up to them playing in a (subjectively) easier conference or them just being *that* good, it's a fact we all have to accept. As for the Eagles, they came out of a loaded NFC despite a multitude of injuries and against pretty much any predictions at the start of the year. While I'll be cheering for the underdog and think they have more than a chance, I think they fall just short come Sunday. Patriots 26, Eagles 20. Eagles have a chance to win at the end but fall short despite a valiant effort.

Claire (aka Claire DaBear), Surrey, Chicago Bears: So this Super Bowl is yet again is a game of Head and Heart. I’d love to see the Eagles lift the Lombardi not only as the underdogs but to see a new team with a super bowl ring. And adding a new flavour to our sport. They are fun, young and dynamic. They have gone from worst to first. And that want makes the NFL exciting to be a fan of. And as a side note I’d love to see Ajay a London lad come good too. But the head says the Brady Bunch aka the Patriots come good yet again they are a Dynasty team without question. Bill will have a game plan and it will be executed with pinpoint precision. And if adjustments need to be made during the game the Patriots are good enough to adapt and change. Super Bowl 51 was a Master Class and in my opinion is the greatest come back in ANY sport. If the Eagles are to win they must not make mistakes control the clock and keep scoring. Because any weaknesses in the game plan will be exploited. I’m hoping for a high scoring game with lots of amazing action and game play. Could it be called boring and predictable that the Patriots are in the Big Dance YET again? Yes it could be but try and think about it another way. We are watching something that will never happen again. The stars have a-lined to create the legend that is Brady. We may not like it but it’s our privilege to watch history in the making. In our old age with our grand kids and great grandchildren will we tell them all about Tom Brady the 6 round QB draft pick and his 6 super bowl rings. And how we watched the greatest player of our sport to ever play the game. 28-24 to the Patriots. But come on Eagles and make me wrong I’ll welcome it.

Charlie, Dudley, Green Bay Packers: Once again, with no real star names on the wrong side of the ball (Hightower’s torn pec aside), no orthodox running game of which to speak and a quarterback in the fifth decade of his life, New England storm through to once more represent the AFC in the NFL’s final showpiece. The NFC throws forward its ninth different representative in the past ten years, this time in the form of second-year coach Doug Pederson’s Philadelphia Eagles. Amazingly, nine teams have won the Super Bowl whilst starting their “Backup” quarterback, so write off Nick Foles, and his 350 passing yards against the best passing defence the NFC had to offer, at your peril. I’m going to, you can’t halt the Boston Machine, it shall run and run forever more. 27 – 23 Pats.

Elijah, Murrieta, California, THE COLTS BABY!!!: I feel like if the eagles defense can consistently get pressure on Tom Brady, than they have an excellent chance of winning this game. We know that Philadelphia is the underdog, but it has been shown in the past, that if you can get to Brady you can beat the patriots. I say it is a close game and somewhat low scoring. But I still say due to Philly being an inexperienced team in this high stakes game, I will say: I give the Pats the win with final score being 24-17.

Mia, Graz, Austria, Seahawks: It's that time of year again. It seems the Patriots have become so dominant that they've taken over the White House. What with scandal after scandal surrounding successes that defy the odds, one would think there's a reason why Brady and Belichick have won 100% of Super Bowls during the Trump administration. Unfortunately there's only one quarterback that deserves to win his ring more than any come Sunday, and he'll be watching from the sidelines. Love them or hate them: put on some green, grab a cheesesteak, load up on D-cell batteries and get ready to boo Santa. Iggles by a score. 30-24.

Lewis, Renfrew, Philadelphia Eagles: Think it’s going to be a comeback victory for the Eagles. Patriots will have a dominant 1st half putting 2 TD's and an FG to the eagles single FG. Saint Nik and the eagles will have a big read option play that makes a huge gain getting the whole offense fired up early in the 2nd half and put 3 TD's against the Pats 1 FG. Prediction: Eagles 24 - 20 Refs

Marc, Aberdeen, Baltimore Ravens: When Stuart asked me to think of a prediction I thought I would have some fun with it. As the great Al Davis said “just win baby” and the pats have done that. Now some might say that some of the wins should have an asterisk so in honour of Al the Patriots will get 2 touchdowns for the asterisk victories. As the Eagles have never won the SB they are awarded 0 points. So, at the half it’s Pats 14 eagles 0 I’ve never been to Boston so no points for the pats there. I’ve been to Philly twice, so that’s 2 touchdowns awarded to them. The score after 4 quarters is Pats 14 Eagles 14. Now we are into overtime and this is where anything can happen so in because of that rule, my partner and I got flashed in Philly by what looked like a homeless gentleman so in honour of the meat and 2 veg on show that’s 3 points to the eagles FINAL SCORE PATS 14 EAGLES 17

First of all, I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated, your responses were all absolutely brilliant and very insightful. And it just goes to show you, everyone has a very different opinion on the game. Most people think it’ll be close, the majority have the Patriots winning (14 people picked the Patriots, 8 people picked the Eagles).

Whatever the score, whatever the outcome, we’ll all be watching on Sunday evening to see who will win Super Bowl LII.

Our live show on Facebook Live will take place at 8pm tomorrow evening.

Until then, Go Colts!
