A look at the New Jets Uniforms by Chris Scott

Thursday night I waited up and watched the New York Jets new uniform and logo unveiling. The show started at 0:30 our time and, after a full 30 minutes of bad stand up by J.B. Smoove, a musical performance by Max (no, me neither) and speeches in which a team who play in New Jersey tried to tell us the incapsulate everything it is to be from New York, the Jets new look was finally revealed…again…because we’d all already seen it after it was leaked on twitter the day before.

So, let’s take a look at this new “identity”, as Nike like to call it, piece by piece.

LOGO

That took 5 years. Look, it’s not that I don’t like the logo, It’s just hard to get excited when the only real change is the word ‘New York’ replacing the letters ‘NY’. It’s ok I guess, it could have been much, much worse.

HELMET

This is my favourite part of the new look. I like the way they’ve managed to combine the two classic Jets look. The green shell with black face mask and white text harkens back to the teams of the 80’s and 90’s while the font used for ‘Jets’ and the football underneath comes from the uniforms of the 60’s and 70’s, as well as the most recent version. I’m also happy, as a fan of an AFC East team, that division will no longer be 75% white helmeted teams and a little variety has been added.

GOTHAM GREEN

That’s right folks, it’s not just green…it’s Gotham Green. Edward Nigma would be proud. Again, this very much reminds me of the uniforms worn in the 80’s and 90’s. The lighter green than the one the team has been using for the last 20 years is definitely an improvement. Can’t say I’m a fan of the white wing things on the shoulders and the large “New York” above the numbers does give the feeling of a college or high school team. I’m also not sold on the combination with green pants that was modelled on Thursday, it’s a little too much green for my taste. Some people will say it’s a little bland but to be honest, I’d rather have a bland design than let Nike go overboard like they did for Cleveland and Jacksonville (when they had the two tone helmet). Overall, I like this look.

SPOTLIGHT WHITE

Nike can’t even make a white jersey without giving it a silly name. It’s pretty much the Green Jersey with the colours swapped…and that’s fine. I actually don’t mind the wing things as much on this one, the splash of green breaks up the white nicely. The green pants combined with green socks will have the horrible side effect (as seen with the Saints and Ravens black pants) of making the players look like they’re wearing leggings. I’m not a fan of when teams do that. Much like the green jersey’s, I can’t complain.

STEALTH BLACK

Having a ‘Stealth’ uniform will come in handy if they ever try this play again http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap3000000417624/New-York-Jets-epic-trick-play-fail. This will be the first time in their history that the Jets have worn a black uniform and, whilst I may be in the minority, I think it goes well with the green. Again, it’s the same design with a change of colours so not much I can say about this that I haven’t said already.

CONCLUSION

Pretty sure, from what I’ve read online, I’m in the vast minority here but I like these new uniforms. Maybe that’s because I’m a Dolphins fan and these remind me of the Rich Kotite era Jets

Good times.
